Eating stinky tofu in Hong Kong

Stinky tofu is one of the great gastronomical items that Hong Kong does very well. It’s available from most street vendors and you just have to follow your nose to find this wicked delight.

The smelly tofu in Hong Kong is astonishingly odoriferous. It smells really, really bad. It made me wince the first time I had it.

This is what the innocent stinky tofu (called chao dau foo) looks like before it’s deep fried. Smelly tofu is basically marinated and fermented tofu, which produces the signature smell. I remember an old HK movie where a Caucasian complains about the smell, tries it and then becomes an ambassador of sorts, loudly proclaiming “This smells really bad but it tastes wonderful”.

That was exactly how I felt. I’m not a big fan of tofu but I was eager to try stinky tofu in Hong Kong. I had it twice at two different street vendors. It’s usually eaten with long wood skewers straight from a paper bag. The smelly tofu costs around HKD 9 (RM 4) for two pieces and you can opt to have spicy hoisin sauce on it.

Stinky tofu has a crumbly crust that smells strongly of ammonia. The odor is palpable – it smells like a public toilet that has not been cleaned for months! The intense aroma is matched by the equally breathtaking taste. Smelly tofu tastes like someone dusted the tofu pieces with dried urine.

It also makes for very messy eating as the entire thing is so greasy it dripped everywhere. However, the experience is very rewarding. Stinky tofu tastes like nothing else in the world. You can smell/taste the ammonia as you chew it and the crust is quite salty. It’s crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside and best eaten piping hot on the street.

You’ll have really bad breath for the rest of the day but it’s worth it!

When you start to run out of things to blog, you can always blog about your foot. Or feet. The more the merrier.

You can always organize like a Feet Party and take lotsa pictures of feet and blog about them. That’s how you have an awesome blog. You’re welcome.

And also this is one of the most disgusting blog post i have written. Well apart from the time i blogged about 600 pictures of my face in a row.

Since it is a disgusting blog post i shall start it off with an ambiguously disturbing photo.

You have been forewarned.

I mean you should be looking forward to seeing the breakfast you ate this morning on your keyboard. But then again if you’re too curious to read what kind of disturbing shit i can come up with, you can always squint through the pictures. Who knows they may end up looking lovely.

At least i will have nice toe nail polish.

And because i am ultimately vain, i don’t only do masks for my face, but for my feet too. Probably the most unseen body part after… nevermind.

Wear the masks on both feet as if you’re wearing socks. Peel off the stickers and press them together, so that the treatment essence doesn’t flow out.

Okay so you will have to wear the foot masks for 120 minutes. At first i was like whaaaaaat but then i surf a few porn sites 9gag and 2 hours was gone. Wheeeew. Gone like that.

If you have sensitive skin, wear it for 90 mins and leave the top open (do not have to press the stickers together) so that the essence will work on the dead skin on your soles only.

So after 120 minutes i removed the masks. And this was how my feet looked. I was like hmmm okay. So what’s so great about this mask?!

I conveniently forgot about it until about four days later, i went to someone else’s house and i walked around and i kept feeling the floor is very dirty and i secretly thought why this person so untidy wtf so i brushed my feet and i felt that there were a lot of stuff stuck on them wtf and the more i brush them off the more crusty it became.

And then i lifted my feet and looked and i went

PEELING OFF.

Once you notice the first signs of peeling, soak your feet in warm water for a minimum of 30 minutes to loosen up the dead skin so that it can be rubbed off easily to reveal baby smooth skin!

It was very disgusting i know but let me tell you it was also ultimate pleasure peeling off those dead skin i kid you not. I would say it surpasses the satisfaction of popping a bubble wrap I AM SERIOUS.  #sweetjesusface

And i swear after the peeling is done you feel like your feet is REBORN.

You can apply lotion to protect your baby smooth feet once all the dead skin is removed.

I guess the only drawback of this awesome foot mask is that somebody may steal your toe-print-skin for identity theft wtf.

Just kidding. I mean, the worst they could do is probably make it into packaged deep-fried snacks. Onomnom.

Kenyataan DSAI Membidas Pembantaian Orang Utan di Kalimantan

Adalah difahamkan keberadaan orang utan di Kalimantan Timur diancam perusahaan kelapa sawit. Menurut beberapa sumber antaranya dari organisasi seumpama Balai Konservasi Sumber Daya Alam dan Centre for Orang Utan Protection, puluhan bukti orang utan ditemui mati sekitar kawasan yang diusahakan PT Khaleeda, usahasama Metro Kajang Holdings Berhad (Malaysia) dan PT Anugerah Urea Sakti.

Menurut organisasi- organisasi tersebut sungguhpun terdapat bukti yang meyakinkan kebanyakan orang utan itu dibunuh secara terancang, berkemungkinannya oleh perusahaan-perusahaan kelapa sawit, pihak berkuasa di kawasan berkenaan masih belum berjaya menahan mana-mana individu atau menetapkan pihak yang bersalah. Ini menyebabkan spesis orang utan di sekitar kawasan tersebut masih terdedah kepada bahaya kepunahan akibat dari ketamakan pihak-pihak tertentu.

Saya tuntas mengecam perbuatan yang tidak bertanggungjawab membunuh spesis orang utan itu dan ianya mestilah dihentikan segera. Perbuatan jelik itu sekiranya benar ternyata mencalar nama baik pembangunan yang sebenarnya berniat membantu penduduk serta kawasan sekitar. Saya juga berharap pihak yang terbukti bersalah agar segera dihadapkan ke muka pengadilan manakala Kerajaan Malaysia perlulah mengambil tindakan segera serta menuntut penjelasan jika benar ada syarikat dari Malaysia terlibat membunuh orang utan.

Isuzu D-Max – all-new model makes debut in Thailand

Isuzu has unveiled its all-new D-Max pickup in Thailand – the full model change version made its debut yesterday, ahead of the similarly-underpinned Chevrolet Colorado, which is expected to be introduced next week.

Not many details about the vehicle abound, but according to the Bangkok Post, the basic shape for the vehicle – which sits on Isuzu’s new i-Grip platform – in its extra and double-cab versions are pretty much the same, and that the new D-Max rolls in with significantly more heft in terms of overall dimensions compared to the outgoing one, even though no figures were available for it at press time.

The company says that the new D-Max’s body is 42% stiffer than the old one, and will help bring about improved handling and ride. In the double-cab, the larger dimensions of the vehicle bring about more legroom space for rear occupants, who also get more comfy seats at the back.

In terms of engines, three turbodiesel options abound – a 177 hp and 380 Nm 3.0 litre heads the list, followed by a 2.5 litre mill in two output tunes, the first being the familiar 116 hp and 280 Nm as seen on the current vehicle, and the other the VGS version offering 136 hp and 320 Nm. As for transmissions, there’s the usual five-speed manual, but the auto tranny is now a five-speed unit, bringing it in line with current expectation.

Among the features to be found on the new ‘un are traction control and a vehicle stability system, and there’s even an eight-speaker audio system, replete with surround sound. Sales of the vehicle, which will be available in 4×2 and 4×4 configurations, are expected to begin in early October in Thailand.

In related news, Isuzu also announced that it will be constructing a new plant in Thailand to bring up its production capacity to meet the increasing demand for pickup trucks and their derivatives. The new facility – consisting of new painting facilities, 2,000t servo press facilities and assembly/inspection lines – will be built within the Isuzu Motors Thailand Gateway plant.

The new factory, to be built at an estimated cost of 18 billion yen, is slated to begin operation by autumn 2012, and when it is completed, Isuzu Motors Thailand’s pickup truck production capacities in both its Samrong and Gateway plants will be increased to 400,000 units yearly.
